TWoP

Tuesday, May 28th, 2002

I admit to reading Television Without Pity, The West Wing forum. While this conjures pangs of shame for such pedestrian pleasures, TWoP is immensely entertaining.
But before you start reading, get the lingo down:
POTUS is an acronym for President of the United States, a.k.a. Jed Bartlett.
FLOTUS, as you can probably figure out, stands for First Lady […]

Weekend Update

Monday, May 27th, 2002

The computer lab is packed. In the words of Andy Martin, “it’s a zoo.” Writing papers: what a fun way to spend Memorial Day.
Alex Golub is another U of C weblogger. I don’t know how he got his own subdomain static IP, more on that later. Update: get a U of C static IP.
The NY […]

The “Manual”

Friday, May 24th, 2002

Read the fucking Manual. Everybody associated with the manual is very cool. They are hip and sexy; elegant and graceful; and at the same time honest and accessible. Their sites are usable, beautiful, and without pretense.
Rock on webloggers.

Collapse

Thursday, May 23rd, 2002

Collapse is quite addictive. I recommend not playing it, because you will get addicted.
If, against my warning, you do play, I recommend saving your bombs. That way, you can use several bombs at the same time for a 40,000 point bonus.

The Future

Update: the new design which I mention is the one you’re currently seeing.
When I recently redesigned ktheory, I used a php template system with the intention of creating multiple templates allowing you to decide the ‘look and feel’ of the site. It’s not working.
I’m currently working on a new system, inspired by Hivelogic. In the […]

Skiplists and Quicksort in C++

Sunday, May 12th, 2002

I recently completed my C++ implementation of a skiplist data structure. Although it lacks many features of a more robust class (i.e. a copy constructor, overloaded operators), changing my implementation into a truly abstract data type would be trivial (just change the search function). As it is, it admirably fulfills the requirements of the assignment.
And […]

Four Blogs

Sunday, May 12th, 2002

It’s a dreary day.
This morning, I came across four nice weblogs.
leuschke.org is about math and such. I’m interested in math and such.
Hivelogic is the coolest weblog I came across today.
Simmer Stock is about food.
What Do I Know has a great design. It’s mostly about Apple computer products, peppered with amusing anecdotes.
All these weblogs are aesthetically […]

Top 100 Books

Thursday, May 9th, 2002

The Norwegian Book Club released a list of the Top 100 Books of All Time.
I’ve read 13.
Speaking of lists, I cracked up at McSweeney’s list of Bad Names for Boats and Featured Menu Items at the Existentialist’s Cafe.

Happy Birthday Bethany

Today is my sister’s seventeenth birthday. She’s really awesome, and I miss her a lot.

Six weblogs, one house

Tuesday, May 7th, 2002

I have recently discovered that three more friends from my ‘house’ last year have weblogs. (My ‘house’ was two floors of my dorm.) They are, Jen, Kristy, and Paul.
This is in addition to Ruthie and Todd.
Including myself, 6 of 60 people formerly in Henderson house have weblogs.
By the way, Goethe rocks my world.

Woogoo sites of note:
50 cups of coffee is a pretty spiffy personal site. I think the title is referencing the Beastie Boys, so that’s pretty cool. And I learned that Libya’s flag is simply green.
Graceless and Spill are nice Woogoo sites too.
Four Word Films Reviews.
Good article. (MeFi discussion deleted)

Interesting things happening with Europe’s conservatives:

New in {fray}

Sunday, May 5th, 2002

Homecoming was added to the {fray} today. I really like it because I can see myself in Kate Cunningham’s shoes in a few years. I’ll be Òtrying to pull myself into something that resembles a functioning adult, handicapped by an overpowering fear of being ordinaryÓ.
(Plus I have first post.)

Verisign sucks

Friday, May 3rd, 2002

In my personal experience, Verisign sucks. In other people’s experience, Verisign sucks.
Verisign is a domain name registrar that is slow, expensive, and screw’s people like Leslie Harpold.

A List of Compact Discs in the USITE Lost and Found

Friday, May 3rd, 2002

My job on campus is to sit at the front desk in the various computer labs, collectively called USITE. USITE is an acronym for User SITE. I donÕt know who came up with that. Anyway, people often leave personal CDs in the CD-ROM drives. When we (USITE Computing Assistants, thatÕs our title) discover them, we […]
