Calmness

Saturday, September 14th, 2002

The New Yorker magazine always has great cover art, but this week’s cover is extraordinary. The current issue has been lying around the house for a few days, and each time I walk past it on the coffee table it instills in me a feeling of peace and calm. It’s rare that I find paintings […]

Vacation

Friday, September 13th, 2002

Today was my last day of work. That’s cool. Now I have a week off until I return to Chicago next Friday.
Earlier this evening, I talked to a friend who lived next to me in the dorms two years ago. It was good to catch up with her and laugh about the ridiculous things that […]

The Iraq debate

Thursday, September 5th, 2002

Thomas L. Friedman, a NY Times columnist, provided a remarkably erudite and provocative analysis of the upcoming conflict with Iraq on today’s episode of Fresh Air on NPR (web site, Real audio). I especially liked his comments on the long term impact an invasion of Iraq would have on oil prices: the U.S. would replace […]

The Berg has a weblog. Women beware.
The movie Super Troopers has quickly become my third favorite comedy, behind Big Lebowski and Office Space. I watched it several times while visiting Margaret this weekend. (Yea Belgian Beer Bar!)

Unposted

Sunday, August 25th, 2002

I’ve half-written two weblog entries; a stream-of-conscious, emotionally introspective reflection of my summer, in which my father embarks on his doctorate of ministry program; and an explanation of a fascinating mathematical property involving the powers of three, which was inspired by a less-than-optimal answer in a Mind Benders book.
So it goes.
As an aside, my Windows […]

Bethany’s application

Wednesday, August 14th, 2002

My sister’s “uncommon application” to the University of Chicago arrived in the mail today. I waxed nostalgic recalling my excitement about applying to college. She intends to apply early action to U of C, just like me. If she attends, she would be a freshman when I’m a senior.
I loved helping her with (i.e. doing) […]

Kevin Guilfoile, writer

Wednesday, August 7th, 2002

I have recently come to appreciate the writing of Kevin Guilfoile. He’s from Chicago, which gives him a leg up on other writers striving for my appreciation.

Law & Order discrepancy

Monday, August 5th, 2002

Earlier tonight, I was watching a Law & Order rerun (Doubles) on TNT. In the episode, a tennis star is attacked seemingly by her rival (a la Nancy Kerrigan and Tanya Harding). The victim has a broken wrist and a bloody nose from the assault. Although there was no rape, murder or attempted murder, detectives […]

The Resurrection

I have not updated in some time, nor have been reading other weblogs. This is because I suck. I hope to stop sucking soon, before the summer is over.
Also, The Official Rock Paper Scissors Stategy Guide is well worth reading.

McClintock House

Wednesday, June 19th, 2002

Giving new meaning to ‘home page’, mc.clintock.com is a hierarchical inventory of every item in the McClintock residence. It’s remarkable how much privacy he gives up by putting everything in his house online. It’s also remarkable that this extensive inventory is hard to maintain and not very useful. But it’s cool nonetheless.

An quote from A.N. Whitehead’s Modes of Thought, page 15:
“Great advances in thought are often the result of fortunate errors. These errors are the result of oversimplification. The advance is due to the fact that, for the moment, the excess is not relevant to the use of the simplified notions. One of the chief examples […]

Chris Matthew’s Weblog

Tuesday, June 4th, 2002

What I really think: the Chris Matthews weblog. Matthews (from MSNBC’s Harball) is far and away my favorite television journalist. Now he, along with other MSNBC commentators, have weblogs. While weblogs aren’t only for journalists, it will be interesting to see how these coporate-sponsored weblogs will mesh with the grass-roots libertarianism (decentralized, anarchic iconoclasm) of […]
