Adele’s Wisdom Teeth

Wednesday, December 19th, 2001

Adele got her wisdom teeth pulled yesterday, so she’s in a lot of pain. Adding insult to injury, she looks funny too. The Internet hopes she gets well soon. The other night, I saw Spy Game with Adele and some other people. Adele was quite underwhelmed by the film, but I liked it. I like […]

The Spot Diner

Friday, December 14th, 2001

I have gone to the Spot diner the past four nights in a row. That is three nights in a row too many.
Here’s a survey from Dawn:1. Shoes on or off? On. 2. Meat or vegetables? Meat, preferably white.3. Desktop or Notebook? PC Desktop, with dreams of a Latitude C400 laptop.4. Red or green? Red. […]

An unfortunate soul

Wednesday, December 12th, 2001

An unfortunate soulIn high school, I took an IB History of the Americas course, in which I wrote a 1500 word essay about an American history topic of my choice. This essay, called the internal assessment, was a large percentage of the final grade for the course. The topic of mine was American propaganda during […]

Sweet Release

Saturday, December 8th, 2001

One more quarter of college is done.
I just got back from a party for my friend Tal. HeÕs going to Israel for the next few weeks, and then heÕs spending the winter quarter abroad in Argentina. He seemed a little excited that both countries are in dire conditions, either politically or economically. Anyway, I hope […]

Praying for Sweet Release

Thursday, December 6th, 2001

The end of final exams is in sight. That is all I have time to say, as saying anything else would disrupt my delicate rhythm of intensely focused studying. I am a finely tuned machine for storing theorems and definitions in short-term memory.

Ssome Old Photos

I posted some old photos I found on my hard drive (~200KB).

I’m not too sure

Monday, December 3rd, 2001

I’m not too sure what îlafur çgœstsson thinks of ktheory because I can’t read Swedish. But, using a Swedish-English dictionary, I know that “snilld” translates to “genius”. I think I like îlafur despite the language barrier.
Actually, the page might be in Icelandic, but I can’t find the word “snilld” in any Icelandic dictionaries.

Jamison talks about the Spot

Wednesday, November 28th, 2001

Jamison talks about the Spot diner, the cultural center of Binghamton–and me wetting myself (figuratively)–in his most recent weblog post. Jay (as in Jason, not as in Jamison) kept referring to this John as “the weakest link”. It cracked me up so bad.

My Zip Disk

Tuesday, November 20th, 2001

I love my Zip diskAn Ode to Ktheory
Ktheory, apart from being a web site, is also a Zip disk. Ktheory the Zip disk is my truest friend. (For clarity’s sake, lowercase ‘k’ ktheory refers to this web site, and capital ‘K’ Ktheory is the Zip disk.) For over two and a half years, I have […]

Math Class

Monday, November 19th, 2001

So, today in math class, we were studying the compactness of sets (don’t worry–you don’t have to know compact sets to understand this post). We were taking about some function called Fu(xi), pronounced F-sub-U of X-sub-I. Or, for brevity’s sake, you could just say F-U of X-I. So, this kid raised his hand and asked, […]

Big Cities

Monday, November 19th, 2001

My favorite reason for living in a big city is seeing aspects of your real life in popular culture mass media. ER is one of my favorite TV shows, and one of the reasons I like it is because it has so many Chicago references. On a re-run I just watched, apartment tenants were rioting […]

“Goddamn right, it’s a beautiful day”

Wednesday, November 14th, 2001

The weather in Chicago has been fantastic the past week, but that’s not the only reason I’m in a good mood.
Today, I got my paper back for my Science, Culture, and Society in Western Civilization (SCS) class. The professor, Bob Richards, is the director of the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies in Science and Medicine […]

Hedwig and the Angry Itch

Sunday, November 11th, 2001

This evening, I saw the movie Hedwig and the Angry Itch. It was decent, with a lot of funny and clever lines. Before the movie, the group of us were mocking the Media Aesthetics course we took last year, a class that taught us more about obfuscation than about art and literary criticism. Thus, using […]

Snappy DresserSaturday, I went shopping

Monday, November 5th, 2001

Snappy DresserSaturday, I went shopping downtown, and I bought the coolest pants: the charcoal hipster pants from the Gap. I’m kind of lucky, because the charcoal hipster pants are on back order, and only the khaki hipsters are listed on Gap.com.

Advice on life

Sunday, November 4th, 2001

A Russian marathon runner, Lyudmila Petrova, talking about running the NYC Marathon despite security concerns:
“I believe in life. Living in Russia is stressful, too. You cannot just hide in your house. You have to live. Life changes. You have a happiness and you have a sadness. You have to face it. You have to believe […]

Honor in battle

Friday, November 2nd, 2001

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: Much worse is the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight - nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety - […]

Looking and Walking at the Same Time

Wednesday, October 31st, 2001

When you walk, where do you look?
Generally, you can look in one of three directions: down, up, or straight ahead. It seems that most people, including myself, naturally look down. By experimenting and being conscious of where I look while I walk, IÕve noticed a correlation between my thoughts and the direction that IÕm looking. […]

I hate…

Tuesday, October 30th, 2001

Word Art. I’m sick of having to hook up the color printer at the computer lab just so somebody can print out a stupid chemistry lab with Word Art titles and gradient-filled Excel charts. Chemistry is supposed to be a difficult major. Don’t these people have anything better to do than make their labs look […]
