Slate has a good article about career mathematicians, focusing on Perelman, who may have proved the Poincaré Conjecture.
Long Bets puts future predictions on the record. Paul Hawken predicts that “by 2050, we will receive intelligent signals from outside our solar system.” Technically, I think the Voyager satellites continued to send signals back to Earth after they left the solar system. Ray Kurzweil (one of my favorite people) weighs in that computers will pass the Turing Test by 2029. Danny Hillis, another one of my favorite people, makes the unpopular bet that the universe will stop expanding.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think that the Voyager probes will have technically left the solar system until they reach the heliopause (which they’re currently searching for).
