Tidbits

I heard about a new method of finding out about ancient ecosystems: by looking for DNA fragments in the soil (scroll down the linked page for audio).

Scientists working with soil from Siberia’s permafrost are surprised to find DNA that appears to come from ancient vertebrates—including wooly mammoths—and plants.

Also, Kevin Guilfoile makes a great Non-Expert.

Quarlo has good photography.

this isn’t very surprising that they found DNA in dirt. What I find surprising is that they can make any credible judgments of ancient life from them. As I doubt there are any long fragments of DNA that would be suitable for sequence analysis. I wish I could read the article but I don’t have an Individual Pass/username. I would think this information has been skewed by the media.
