Minor celebrity

Thursday, February 6th, 2003

Previously on ktheory, I alluded to Susie saying “wha’ ha’ happened”. This is part of Susie’s affected idiolect. For more of her colloquialisms, read the following e-mail (for context, Susie’s sister is Margaret, who is pretty much my conjoined twin):

yo yo whattup aaron-
wha ha happened was that i was talking with my sista, and she [...]

Today’s goings on

Thursday, February 6th, 2003

Bill O’Reilly of the O’Reilly Factor (radio/Fox News talk show) got into a shouting match with Jeremy Glick, a supporter of Not In Our Name and whose father died in the 9/11 attacks. It denigrated into O’Reilly yelling at Glick, “Shut up! Shut up! Cut his mic.”
Read the transcript at This Modern World. Impressive behavior [...]

Evening recap

Thursday, February 6th, 2003

I suggested to some friends that the verb ‘to poop’ be used primarily as a reflexive verb. So, instead of “taking a poop”, you “poop yourself”. Instead of saying, “I have to go poop,” you say, “I have to poop myself.” This is funny because it raises the possibility of pooping other things. E.g., “I [...]

On the case against Iraq: national vs. international response

Wednesday, February 5th, 2003

Colin Powell this morning presented to the UN what the US government considers undisputable evidence that Iraq has not cooperated with UN weapons inspectors and is concealing weapons of mass destruction. Powell cited recorded telephone conversations and satellite photographs among his evidence (transcript, to see Powell’s slides, click ‘Gallery’ in the Key Points section of [...]

Reiterating how good yesterday was

Wednesday, February 5th, 2003

So, I left you yesterday with me having taken my bioterrorism midterm and having had lunch with Tala. Tala, by the way, is really cool. We talked about her B.A. thesis on cosmopolitanism. Aren’t I erudite?
Anywho, immediately after posting yesterday, Evelyn, Margaret and I went to Chinatown for bubble tea. (I do not favor the [...]

Damn it all to hell

Monday, February 3rd, 2003

In a stunning blow to the pride of Chicagoans, White Sox’ Comiskey Park will be renamed U.S. Cellular Field.
Isn’t it enough that we endure their obnoxious commercials on TV? Now they castrate any chance of civic pride on the South Side.
I’ve never been to White Sox game, though. So I don’t really care that much.

The Slammer worm

Monday, February 3rd, 2003

The Slammer computer worm caused major congestion on the internet last week. The worm represents a significant milestone in the evolution of computer worms. It was the fastest spreading worm yet, and remarkably small at only 376 bytes. For the first few minutes after its release, the number of infected computers doubled every 8.5 seconds. [...]

The New York Times Magazine has a great article on sleep disorders.
The Non-Expert has some excellent tips for staying warm through these blustery months.
Some girl from Joe Millionaire, which I’ve never watched, was in some fetish films.

Columbia Distaster

Sunday, February 2nd, 2003

Yesterday’s explosion of the Columbia space shuttle was the largest news event since 9/11. There are two threads on Slashdot, one, two, and Kottke compiled a list of links.
It’s certainly tragic, especially for Israel. But it gives us a deeper appreciation for how extraordinarily difficult and complicated space travel is for our civilization.
This accident calls [...]
