A few weeks ago, I told you about my adventures at the Kentucky Derby. Here are the pictures (in pop-up windows):
Updated June 1 with more hi-res pictures
One, the paddock, where you can see the horses and the jockeys before the race.
Two, a horse being taken through the paddock.
Three, Mike Rosenberg (left) and I smoke cigars […]

I’m writing this paper right now for my Science, Culture, and Society class. It’s due tomorrow and I have 5 of 12-15 pages. It’s going to be a late night.
But at least I was able to choose a topic that I like. The paper is fun actually. It’s about the issue of global warming from […]

Another update: I’ve disabled the metalinks because I didn’t find them very useful.
Notice all those little [b]’s following links in my weblog? Those are metalinks, created using Meta Linker. Meta Linker is a piece of javascript that creates a small link to the blogdex database after each link you blog. I think it’s a very […]

I admit to reading Television Without Pity, The West Wing forum. While this conjures pangs of shame for such pedestrian pleasures, TWoP is immensely entertaining.
But before you start reading, get the lingo down:
POTUS is an acronym for President of the United States, a.k.a. Jed Bartlett.
FLOTUS, as you can probably figure out, stands for First Lady […]

Fox News, the paragon of journalism, is focusing on the ever-growing “stupid” demographic. The above graphic came from their weekend reporting on an explosion in Encino, CA. Encino is a small suburban neighborhood 15 miles from Los Angeles, recognizable from the 1992 flick Encino Man starring Brendan Fraser. In case the Fox News audience had […]

The computer lab is packed. In the words of Andy Martin, “it’s a zoo.” Writing papers: what a fun way to spend Memorial Day.
Alex Golub is another U of C weblogger. I don’t know how he got his own subdomain static IP, more on that later. Update: get a U of C static IP.
The NY […]

Read the fucking Manual. Everybody associated with the manual is very cool. They are hip and sexy; elegant and graceful; and at the same time honest and accessible. Their sites are usable, beautiful, and without pretense.
Rock on webloggers.

Collapse is quite addictive. I recommend not playing it, because you will get addicted.
If, against my warning, you do play, I recommend saving your bombs. That way, you can use several bombs at the same time for a 40,000 point bonus.

Rate my friend Parker.
Abercrombie & Fitch gets more bad publicity for selling thongs for girls ages 10-16. Apparently, these types of antics which offend the majority of society appeal to their target demographic.
Cheney Says New Qaeda Attacks Against U.S. ‘Almost Certain’.
Stephen Jay Gould died. (good resource of Gould’s work)

Update: the new design which I mention is the one you’re currently seeing.
When I recently redesigned ktheory, I used a php template system with the intention of creating multiple templates allowing you to decide the ‘look and feel’ of the site. It’s not working.
I’m currently working on a new system, inspired by Hivelogic. In the […]

This evening was pretty chill. Margaret and I went to a sushi bar in Old Town. I had Chimay beer at the restaurant, which is really good beer (perhaps a bit on the pretentious side—I’ll stick to Rolling Rock for most social situations in college). Then we saw Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the […]

During spring break, I spent an afternoon setting up new laptop computers in the U of C ‘technology classroom’. It consisted of installing a wireless base station, unpacking 20 Apple iBooks and 20 Dell Dimension laptops, and installing some software. I was making $10/hour, and playing with new computers is fun. Plus, I had nothing […]

At MIT, they can put words in our mouths
The Boston Globe reports that MIT has developed a technology for morphing video images to make subjects appear to say anything. This means a person could be recorded saying one thing, then MIT’s new software can create a video of the person saying something else. (Read the […]

Last night I saw a sneak preview of About a Boy at Doc Films. Hugh Grant was really funny, but the boy (Nicholas Hoult) was annoying. Overall, it was enjoyable, partly because it was free. ItÕd be a good movie to take a date to because itÕs about a guy finding his sensitive side, assuming […]

I feel like I have a ridiculous amount of work for the next few days. The last thing I should be doing is blogging, but, you know how it is…
I need to read/write about the standardization of scientific measurements for my Science, Culture, and Society in Western Civ class; read/write about the scientific work of […]

I recently completed my C++ implementation of a skiplist data structure. Although it lacks many features of a more robust class (i.e. a copy constructor, overloaded operators), changing my implementation into a truly abstract data type would be trivial (just change the search function). As it is, it admirably fulfills the requirements of the assignment.
And […]

It’s a dreary day.
This morning, I came across four nice weblogs.
leuschke.org is about math and such. I’m interested in math and such.
Hivelogic is the coolest weblog I came across today.
Simmer Stock is about food.
What Do I Know has a great design. It’s mostly about Apple computer products, peppered with amusing anecdotes.
All these weblogs are aesthetically […]

I want the book The Sound of the One Hand: 281 Zen Koans With Answers by Hau Hoo. Cecil from The Straight Dope says the book, “is my idea of an admirably no-bullshit approach to cosmic enlightenment”. That’s exactly what I need.
I’m sure that in this book lay the solutions to all my problems. Unfortunately, […]

This is a totally hilarious letter written by indie record label manager Bob Salerno (of Chicago-based Bobsled Records) to his band, The Waxwings, after their disasterous record release show.
Highlights include:
“You play to ONLY 300 people at your home town RECORD RELEASE show and 80% of them were at the bar in the back by the […]
